Privacy Policy

1. Who this policy covers

This Privacy Policy applies to the Preps website, account features, and AI-assisted Mains answer evaluation (together, the “Service”). “Preps”, “we”, “us”, and “our” refer to the operator of the Service.

2. Information we handle

Information kept on your device

Your saved questions, completed-question filtering, review schedule, study preferences, typed drafts, and theme are stored in your browser.

Prelims practice information

When you answer a Prelims question, we save the question identifier, selected option, whether it was correct, and the time of the attempt. For signed-out visitors this is associated only with an opaque cookie identifier. For signed-in learners it is associated with the account. Anonymous history is not transferred into an account when you sign in.

If you use the concept chat after answering, we process and save your messages and the generated replies with that answered question. The chat is limited to that question and is available to signed-out visitors as well as signed-in learners.

Account information

If you sign in with Google, we receive your provider account identifier, verified email address, display name, and basic profile information made available through Google and Supabase. You may optionally add a phone number and answer fixed-choice questions about your target exam year, attempt history, preparation stage, Mains writing medium, and typical daily study time. These details are profile information only and are not used to sign in.

Evaluation content

When you select Evaluate my answer, we process and save the question, paper, typed answer or uploaded PDF, related evaluation settings, generated feedback, marks, processing status, and relevant completion or failure details. This creates a private evaluation record for your account. Handwritten PDFs are kept in private object storage rather than in the primary application database.

Personal preparation summaries

For signed-in learners, we process recorded Prelims attempts, completed Mains evaluation feedback, the preparation details you declare, and messages you write in Preps chats to generate block reviews, a personal preparation summary, and optional practice suggestions. The summary may change as newer activity adds to or contradicts earlier patterns. Generated assistant replies are not treated as evidence about you, and raw evidence is not displayed with the homepage summary.

Technical information

Our hosting and security providers may process routine network and request information such as IP address, browser type, timestamps, and security events to deliver and protect the Service. If enabled, Google Analytics and PostHog receive pseudonymous usage events such as screen views and feature actions so we can understand and improve the Service. PostHog may also record sessions to help us understand how the Service is used. We do not send answer text, concept-chat messages or replies, uploaded PDFs, email addresses, phone numbers, or payment-card and provider details to these analytics services.

3. How we use information

• Authenticate you and maintain your account.
• Provide optional profile features and enforce sign-in limits.
• Save the preparation details you choose and let you update them from your profile.
• Record Prelims attempts and calculate the progress information shown to you.
• Answer and retain the question-scoped concept chats you request.
• Generate the Mains evaluation you request.
• Save your submitted answer and feedback so you can access your evaluation history.
• Generate personal preparation summaries, discuss them with you, and offer an optional focused practice block.
• Secure, troubleshoot, and improve the reliability of the Service.
• Respond to support, privacy, and legal requests.

Where applicable, we process personal data with your consent or as otherwise permitted by applicable law. We do not sell your personal information or use your evaluation content for advertising.

4. Services that help us operate

We share information only as needed with service providers that perform specific functions for us:

• Google for Google sign-in.
• Supabase for authentication and hosted Postgres infrastructure.
• Cloudflare for site delivery, serverless functions, security, queued processing, private PDF storage, and database connectivity.
• OpenAI for processing answers, generating evaluation feedback, responding to Prelims concept chats, and generating or discussing personal preparation summaries.
• Google Analytics and PostHog, when enabled, for aggregated product-usage analytics.

These providers process information under their own terms and data-protection commitments. We may also disclose information when required by law, to protect users or the Service, or as part of a business transfer with appropriate safeguards.

5. Storage and retention

• Device data: remains until you clear it through the Service or your browser.
• Anonymous Prelims attempts: are used for up to 400 days while the anonymous cookie identifies the same visitor, unless you reset progress sooner. Expired attempts are excluded from your progress and removed during routine cleanup.
• Account Prelims attempts: remain with your account until you reset progress, delete the account, or ask us to delete them, subject to any limited retention required for security, legal, or operational purposes.
• Preps chats: bounded concept-chat and preparation-summary conversation histories are automatically deleted after 400 days. Infrastructure and AI providers may also retain limited request data under their applicable policies and safeguards.
• Account data and preparation summaries: remain while your account is active or as reasonably required for security, legal, and operational purposes. Older summary versions are retained internally until account deletion or a verified deletion request.
• Evaluation content: submitted answers, uploaded PDFs, and generated evaluations remain in your private account history until you delete them or ask us to delete them, subject to any limited retention required for security, legal, or operational purposes. Infrastructure and AI providers may also retain limited request data under their applicable policies and safeguards.

6. Your choices and rights

You can use Prelims PYQ practice without an account within the displayed allowance, reset your Prelims progress, leave the phone field blank, change your preparation answers from your profile, remove local browser data, or sign out at any time. Depending on applicable law, you may also request access, correction, deletion, restriction, or withdrawal of consent for personal data we control.

To make a privacy request, email nitin@preps.in from the address associated with your account. We may need to verify your identity before acting on a request.

7. Security and international processing

We use reasonable technical and organisational safeguards, including authenticated requests and restricted database access. No online service can guarantee absolute security. Our providers may process information in countries other than your own, subject to their contractual and legal safeguards.

8. Children

The Service is intended for people aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information, contact us so we can review and delete it where appropriate.

9. Changes and contact

We may update this policy as the Service changes. We will revise the “Last updated” date and provide additional notice when a material change requires it.
