Consider the following statements:<br/>1. Between 3:16 p.m. and 3:17 p.m., both hour hand and minute hand coincide.<br/>2. Between 4:58 p.m. and 4:59 p.m., both minute hand and second hand coincide.<br/><br/>Which of the above statements is/are correct?

  1. 1 only
  2. 2 only
  3. Both 1 and 2
  4. Neither 1 nor 2

Answer

Both 1 and 2

1. Correct. At 3:16, the hour hand is at (90 + 8 = 98^\circ) and the minute hand at (96^\circ); at 3:17, they are at (98.5^\circ) and (102^\circ). Since the minute hand overtakes the hour hand between these times, they coincide in this interval.

2. Correct. At 4:58:00, the minute hand is at (348^\circ) and the second hand at (0^\circ); by 4:59:00, the minute hand is at (354^\circ) and the second hand again at (0^\circ). The second hand gains (354^\circ) over the minute hand in that minute, so one coincidence occurs between 4:58 and 4:59.

Hence, both 1 and 2 are correct.
