Prelims 2022 · CSAT / Logical Reasoning · Question 6
Two friends X and Y start running and they run together for 50 m in the same direction and reach a point. X turns right and runs 60 m, while Y turns left and runs 40 m. Then X turns left and runs 50 m and stops, while Y turns right and runs 50 m and then stops. How far are the two friends from each other now?
Answer
100 m
- Take the common 50 m run as along the north direction. They reach the same point first.
- X's path: turns right 60 m (east), then left 50 m (north) → final position = (60, 50) from the turning point.
- Y's path: turns left 40 m (west), then right 50 m (north) → final position = (-40, 50) from the turning point.
- Both are on the same horizontal line; separation = 60 + 40 = 100 m.
- Verdict: Correct answer is (a) 100 m.
