Prelims 2018 · Polity and Constitution · Question 32
With reference to the election of the President of India, consider the following statements:
1. The value of the vote of each MLA varies from State to State.
2. The value of the vote of MPs of the Lok Sabha is more than the value of the vote of MPs of the Rajya Sabha.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
Answer
1 only
1. Correct. In the Presidential election, the value of an MLA’s vote is based on the population of that State (1971 Census basis) and the number of elected MLAs, so it varies from State to State.
2. Incorrect. Every elected MP, whether from the Lok Sabha or the Rajya Sabha, has the same vote value in the Presidential election; there is no higher value for Lok Sabha MPs.
Therefore, only statement 1 is correct.
