Prelims 2024 · Geography · Question 57
Consider the following statements: Statement-I: Rainfall is one of the reasons for weathering of rocks. Statement-II: Rain water contains carbon dioxide in solution. Statement-III: Rain water contains atmospheric oxygen. Which one of the following is correct in respect of the above statements?
Answer
Both Statement-II and Statement-III are correct and both of them explain Statement-I
Statement-I: Correct. Rainfall contributes to weathering, especially chemical weathering of rocks.
Statement-II: Correct. Rainwater dissolves atmospheric CO2 to form weak carbonic acid, which chemically weathers rocks like limestone; so it explains Statement-I.
Statement-III: Correct. Rainwater also contains dissolved atmospheric oxygen, which causes oxidation of minerals (especially iron-bearing rocks); this too explains Statement-I.
Answer: Both Statement-II and Statement-III are correct, and both explain Statement-I.
