Prelims 2024 · Geography · Question 56
With reference to the Himalayan rivers joining the Ganga downstream of Prayagraj from West to East, which one of the following sequences is correct?
Answer
Gomati - Ghaghara - Gandak - Kosi
- (a) Ghaghara - Gomati - Gandak - Kosi: Incorrect. Downstream of Prayagraj, Gomati joins the Ganga before Ghaghara (near Ghazipur before Chhapra region), so this west-to-east order is wrong.
- (b) Gomati - Ghaghara - Gandak - Kosi: Correct. From west to east downstream of Prayagraj, the confluences occur as Gomati (near Ghazipur) → Ghaghara (near Chhapra) → Gandak (near Hajipur/Patna region) → Kosi (near Kursela).
- (c) Ghaghara - Gomati - Kosi - Gandak: Incorrect. It wrongly places Ghaghara before Gomati and also Kosi before Gandak.
- (d) Gomati - Ghaghara - Kosi - Gandak: Incorrect. While Gomati before Ghaghara is right, Gandak joins the Ganga west of Kosi, so the last two are reversed.
