Hexavalent chromium contamination of groundwater

Environment

Groundwater contamination is often invisible until it becomes severe. The case connects industrial regulation, environmental health, aquifer remediation, safe drinking water and accountability for legacy pollution.

India’s first guide to Open Natural Ecosystems

Environment

Conservation policy has historically privileged forests. Recognising ONEs can improve land classification, prevent damaging afforestation and give pastoral livelihoods and grassland biodiversity a clearer place in policy.

Hara mangroves of the Persian Gulf

Environment

Hara forests combine three valuable prelims themes—mangrove adaptations, a UNESCO-recognised island landscape and the location of a strategic maritime chokepoint.

Kerala is now officially "Keralam"

Polity

State renaming is a recurring Polity fact, worth knowing both the constitutional basis and the running list of states that have changed names.

The Turkish cave linked to Homer's Odyssey

History & Culture

Ancient Greek literature and its geography occasionally appears in world-history-adjacent Prelims trivia, and it's a reminder that "History & Culture" isn't limited to Indian history.

Census 2027: Disability Groups Flag Risk of Undercounting

Polity

A Census does more than count people. Its categories determine which social realities become visible to governments. Simplification may make enumeration easier, but excessive grouping can turn disability into a single administrative label and weaken evidence-based policymaking.

Recovering Rare Earth Elements from Fly Ash and Red Mud

Science & Technology

The project represents urban and industrial mining—recovering critical minerals from material already extracted and discarded. Its real success will depend on recovering several products together, thereby making the overall process economically and environmentally viable.

Transmission Bottlenecks and Renewable-Energy Curtailment

Economy

Installed capacity alone does not measure an energy transition. If clean electricity cannot reach consumers when it is produced, developers lose revenue, electricity is wasted and thermal plants remain necessary for grid reliability.

Solar Irrigation: Climate Solution or Groundwater Risk?

Environment

India has more than 25 million agricultural pumps. Replacing diesel and subsidised grid electricity can reduce emissions and subsidy costs, but poorly designed incentives could exchange a carbon problem for a groundwater crisis.

China Expands Antelope Reef in the South China Sea

International Relations

Artificial-island construction can alter the military balance without resolving sovereignty. Reclamation does not itself create new maritime entitlements under international law, but physical control allows a country to maintain aircraft, ships and surveillance systems in disputed waters.

Mapping India’s Deep-Sea Fishery Resources

Geography

Deep-sea resources can support food security and the blue economy, but many species grow slowly and remain poorly studied. Resource mapping should therefore precede commercial exploitation, with precautionary catch limits, protection of breeding grounds and continuous ecosystem monitoring.

Sujalam Bharat Digital Public Infrastructure

Government Schemes

The initiative seeks to move rural water governance from counting pipelines and connections to monitoring whether households receive reliable and safe water. Its effectiveness will depend on accurate local data, Panchayat capacity and strong privacy safeguards.

Pradhan Mantri Janjatiya Vikas Mission

Government Schemes

The mission connects tribal rights, women’s self-help groups, forest conservation and rural enterprise. Its success should be measured through higher and more stable household incomes—not merely by the number of Kendras sanctioned.

Supreme Court Reconsiders the Meaning of ‘Industry’

Polity

The decision does not itself provide a final comprehensive definition for every sector. It clears the ground for courts to interpret the new Code afresh. Future cases involving hospitals, educational institutions, charities and public-service bodies will determine how wide the new protection actually is.

Relocation of Villages from Satkosia Tiger Reserve

Environment

Conservation and community rights are not competing inconveniences from which the State may simply choose one. A relocation programme becomes legitimate only when it is genuinely voluntary, ecologically necessary and capable of restoring livelihoods rather than merely paying compensation.

Gaganyaan Mission and Its Heat Shield

Science & Technology

Gaganyaan is not only about placing astronauts in orbit. It requires India to master human-rated launch systems, life support, emergency escape, re-entry, parachute descent and sea recovery as one integrated safety chain.

India–Japan Maritime Security Arrangement

International Relations

The relationship is moving from diplomatic convergence to operational cooperation. Its long-term value will depend on whether agreements produce interoperable systems, regular information exchange and actual defence-industrial projects.

Afghanistan Five Years After the Taliban’s Return

International Relations

Afghanistan illustrates the distinction between diplomatic recognition and practical engagement: States may deal with a de facto authority without accepting it as a legitimate government.

Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme

Government Schemes

India already manufactures phones at scale, but many high-value components and technologies remain imported. The scheme’s success should be measured by genuine localisation and technological capability, not merely the number of devices assembled.

Pradhan Mantri Annadata Aay Sanrakshan Abhiyan

Government Schemes

PM-AASHA uses different mechanisms for different market situations. Its success depends on the price farmers actually receive rather than procurement targets or portal registrations alone.

Ken–Betwa Link Project

Geography

The project tests whether inter-basin transfers can provide water security without transferring environmental and social costs to another landscape. Its performance will influence future river-linking projects across India.

Facial Recognition at Protest Sites

Polity

Technology may help identify genuine threats, but mass identification without clear limits can convert lawful protest into a continuously monitored activity. A regulatory framework must define permissible purposes, data-retention limits, independent oversight and remedies for wrongful identification.

UDISE+ Report on School Education

Polity

National averages can conceal serious regional inequalities. Education planning must therefore be based on district-level gaps rather than enrolment figures alone.

New Classification of the Ganga Floodplain

Environment

Floodplains are part of a river’s natural system, not vacant land awaiting development. Regulation must consider future climate-driven extreme rainfall, not merely the frequency of floods recorded in the past.

Security Review of the Siliguri Corridor

Geography

Disruption of the corridor can affect trade, supplies and connectivity with the entire Northeast. Security therefore requires both military preparedness and resilient alternative road, rail and air links.

Selection of the Next UN Secretary-General

International Relations

Although formally an international appointment, the veto gives the five permanent members decisive influence. The selection has also renewed debate over regional rotation, transparency and women’s representation in the UN’s highest office.

Access and Benefit-Sharing of Biological Resources

Environment

Biodiversity has economic value, but communities and institutions that conserve biological resources are often excluded from commercial returns. ABS attempts to connect commercial innovation with conservation and distributive justice.

Exercise Pitch Black and Exercise Udara Shakti

International Relations

Provides experience of operating with different aircraft, communication systems and tactical procedures. Strengthens defence relations with Australia, Malaysia and other Indo-Pacific partners. Improves the IAF’s ability to participate in complex multinational missions.

ASW Shallow-Water Craft Mangrol

Science & Technology

It strengthens coastal anti-submarine capability while reducing dependence on imported defence equipment. PIB release

Evidence of 3.5-Billion-Year-Old Microbial Life in India

Science & Technology

Earth formed approximately 4.54 billion years ago. The finding suggests that microbial life was established within about a billion years of Earth’s formation. It may help scientists examine whether life emerges readily when suitable planetary conditions exist. Claims of still older life exist, but many remain disputed because the rocks or biological signatures cannot be dated conclusively.
